Overnight Shift Calculator
Accurately calculate elapsed hours for shifts crossing 12:00 AM midnight, incorporate night shift differentials, and review FLSA workweek boundary guidelines.
Overnight Shift & Midnight-Crossing Calculator
Calculates night shifts crossing 12:00 AM midnight with elapsed duration, meal break deductions, and wage differential analysis.
Break timing is unspecified. Pre/post-midnight figures reflect elapsed shift duration before meal break deduction.
Regulatory Context: Midnight vs. FLSA Workweek Boundaries (29 CFR § 778.105)
Under federal FLSA 29 CFR § 778.105, a workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours (seven consecutive 24-hour periods). Midnight is a calendar mark, not necessarily an overtime cutoff. For shifts crossing midnight within a standard workweek, hours simply accumulate toward the 40-hour overtime threshold. If this shift crosses your employer's established 168-hour workweek cutoff (e.g. Sunday midnight), hours worked within each respective 168-hour period must be credited to that workweek. Note: Complete cross-boundary overtime calculations require full calendar dates and your employer's official workweek cutoff schedule.
How Overnight Shifts Are Calculated Across Midnight
Standard time subtraction fails when a shift begins in the PM and finishes in the AM (for instance, 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM yields a negative number in basic spreadsheets). Understanding midnight transitions and FLSA workweek standards ensures hours are calculated transparently.
The Modulo Midnight Calculation
When clock-out time is earlier than clock-in time, the shift crosses midnight. Total elapsed time is computed as:
Worked Example: 10:00 PM (1320m) to 6:30 AM (390m) with 30m break:
(1440 - 1320) + 390 = 120 + 390 = 510 total elapsed minutes. Subtracting 30m meal break = 480 paid minutes (8.00 decimal hours).
Workweek Definition: 29 CFR § 778.105
Under 29 CFR § 778.105, an employee's workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours (seven consecutive 24-hour periods). It may begin on any day and at any hour established by the employer, but once set, it remains fixed.
When an overnight shift occurs between regular days inside the same 168-hour workweek (e.g., Tuesday night into Wednesday morning), midnight is merely a calendar transition and has no effect on weekly overtime. All hours accumulate toward the 40-hour threshold.
If an overnight shift crosses your employer's established 168-hour workweek boundary (for example, Sunday at 12:00 AM midnight), hours worked prior to the cutoff belong to Week 1, and hours worked after the cutoff belong to Week 2.
Note: This calculator calculates single shift elapsed durations and meal breaks. Complete multi-week overtime auditing requires full calendar date scheduling and your employer's official 168-hour workweek boundary schedule.
Night Shift Differentials & Regular Rate
While the FLSA does not federally mandate higher wages for graveyard or night shifts, many healthcare facilities, manufacturers, and logistics warehouses offer shift differential premiums (e.g. +$2.00 to +$5.00/hr). Under federal law (29 U.S.C. § 207(e)), any nondiscretionary shift differential must be included in the employee's regular rate when computing overtime.
