Mathematical & Statutory Guide

How Overtime Pay is Calculated in the United States

The federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires employers to pay nonexempt employees at least one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 hours during a workweek. Understanding how this multiplier works ensures your paycheck accurately reflects your labor.

Time-and-a-Half Formula (1.5×)

Overtime Rate = Regular Hourly Rate × 1.5
Overtime Pay = Overtime Hours × Overtime Rate

Example: At a $22.00/hr base rate, your overtime rate is $33.00/hr. If you work 8 hours of overtime, your overtime gross pay is 8 × $33.00 = $264.00.

Double-Time Formula (2.0×)

Double Time Rate = Regular Hourly Rate × 2.0
Double Time Pay = Double Time Hours × Double Time Rate

Example: At a $22.00/hr base rate, your double-time rate is $44.00/hr. If you work 4 hours of double time, your double-time gross pay is 4 × $44.00 = $176.00.

Important: Regular Rate of Pay & Calculator Scope

This simple calculator assumes the entered rate is your statutory regular rate. If you receive non-discretionary bonuses, commissions, shift differentials, or work at multiple hourly rates during the same workweek, your statutory regular rate must be calculated under 29 U.S.C. § 207(e) before applying overtime.
